WorkSafe BC Asbestos Work Training Programs

As of January 1, 2024 all asbestos abatement workers or waste transporters in BC must complete mandatory training and hold a valid certificate. Find out if you require training here.

Island EHS is a WorkSafeBC Authorized Asbestos Abatement Training Agency offering the following courses:

  • Level 1: Foundational Awareness – 4 hours
  • Level S: Surveyor Safety – 8 hours
  • Level 2: Asbestos Safety (Level 1 included) – 20 hours
  • Level 3: Asbestos Safety Leader – 8 hours

Level 1: Foundational Awareness

Designed for those transporting and/or disposing of asbestos-containing waste, as well as those who benefit from general asbestos safety knowledge. Covers foundational awareness topics such as sources of asbestos, hazard awareness, health effects of asbestos exposure, and the importance of safe work procedures.

Each student will be required to pass a WorkSafeBC Exam to obtain certification.

Classes are in-person only at this time.

Courses may be delivered at our Victoria and Nanaimo offices or at your facility. Additional costs may apply if delivered at your facility. Note that your facility must have a suitable space to deliver the knowledge-based components.

Level S: Surveyor Safety

For anyone conducting asbestos surveys / collecting asbestos samples. Covers pre-sampling planning, applying safe practices and procedures while sampling, differences between types of surveys and inventories, and report assemblage. This course combines both Level 1: Foundational Awareness and Level S: Surveyor. If you successfully complete the course, you will be certified for both levels.

Each student will be required to pass the WorkSafeBC Exam and the course Practical Skills components to obtain certification.

Classes are in-person only.

Courses may be delivered at our Victoria and Nanaimo offices or at your facility. Additional costs may apply if delivered at your facility. Note that your facility must have a suitable space to deliver both the knowledge-based components and the practical skills-based components. Contact us for details.

Level 2: Asbestos Safety

For anyone conducting asbestos abatement work in a building. This course covers the planning and set-up stages, safety measures, and abatement practices and procedures used during both moderate and high-risk work, along with waste disposal considerations. This course includes Level 1: Foundational Awareness.

Each student will be required to pass the WorkSafeBC Exam and the course Practical Skills components to obtain certification.

Classes are in-person only.

Courses must be delivered at Client’s facility only. Clients will be required to provide a classroom and/or boardroom for the knowledge-based components, along with a space to conduct the practical skills components (e.g., glove bag, containment setup and abatement simulation). These spaces must be large enough to include all students for the required components. Additional costs may apply depending on the location of your facility.

Level 3: Asbestos Safety Leader

For those in a Supervisory role, who oversee asbestos abatement work. This course covers identifying asbestos, interpreting air monitoring results, identifying workers who are unfit for work, understanding health and safety roles and responsibilities at a work site, remedying unsafe acts of work and work site conditions, and understanding documentation required at your work sites.

This course requires the completion of Level 1: Foundational Awareness and Level 2: Asbestos Safety as a prerequisite.

Each student will be required to pass the WorkSafeBC Exam to obtain certification.
